Dr. Tim Dejager

Dr. Tim Dejager is co-leading a project in Sri Lanka on Scaling Up Sustainable Aquaculture in Sri Lanka (Canadian International Food Security Research Fund, by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) Canada and Foreign Affairs, Trade, and Development Canada). He has been involved in research for development projects in Sri Lanka for over 5 years.

He has been active in aquaculture for over 16 years: for 5 years as partner in an oyster and mussel production business in British Columbia, Canada; and for the past 11 years consulting, teaching, and conducting research in the global aquaculture industry. He specializes in knowledge mobilization, innovation, and research program development and management.

He completed a BSc in biology and holds a PhD from the University of Toronto in the history and philosophy of science and technology. He held a two-year post-doctoral fellowship at the University Manchester in the UK followed by 6 months at the Australian Institute of Marine Science before returning to Canada where he became involved in aquaculture. He is Adjunct Faculty at Vancouver Island University (Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries) and recently held a research associate position at the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He also helps manage the British Columbia Aquatic Food Resources Society in Canada, an organization formed to support research and innovation seafood and aquatic resource industries. He has been principal of co3 consulting since 2002. co3 is an acronym identifying three key steps of knowledge mobilization: connect – contribute – collaborate.

He lives in Nanaimo, Canada; Brussels, Belgium; and Negombo, Sri Lanka.

Dr. Shi-Yen Shiau -ICFA2014

Prof. Shi-Yen Shiau

National Endowed Chair Professor in fish nutrition at Department of Food & Nutrition, Providence University and Department of Food Science, National Taiwan Ocean University. He graduated with a Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition at the Texas Tech University and spent 3 years in postdoctoral research in the Department of Nutritional Science, University of California at Berkeley. Since returning to Taiwan in 1983, Professor Shiau has been an active researcher, published over 140 refereed international journal papers along with several book chapters and has received numerous awards for outstanding research. His current research interests include: biological basis of micro-nutrient requirements and nutrient interactions in tilapia, grouper and grass shrimp and their effects on immunity. Prof. Shiau has been a member of a number of professional societies including American Society for Nutritional Science, World Aquaculture Society, Asian Fisheries Society etc. and served as Board Director of the World Aquaculture Society, President of the Taiwan Fisheries Society, Councilor of the Asian Fisheries Society. Shi-Yen also serves on the editorial boards of the international Journals “Aquaculture”, “Aquaculture Nutrition” and “Aquaculture Research” He has been Editor for the journal “Aquaculture Research” since 2010. He is the past Editor-in-Chief of “Asian Fisheries Science”. Since 1994, 1995, Professor Shiau has served on the International Scientific Committee on Fish Nutrition and Feeding, and the National Committee for the Pacific Science Association, respectively and since 2009, Dr. Shiau has been a member of the NRC Committee on Nutrient Requirements of Fish and Shrimp. Shi-Yen has supervised more than 100 graduate students with either Master or PhD degrees.
